MODEL HISTORY

Introduced in 1968 and sold through to 1977 the E3 ‘New Six' saloon was praised by reviewers as ‘delightful' and ‘superb', some concluding as ‘one of the world's best buys'. The roomy saloon had 4 doors and handled well which was a sharp contrast to the luxury Mercedes of the time. In fact BMWs introduction of the E3 was designed to pry some of the large luxury car class market away from Mercedes Benz. In the process the model established BMWs reputation as a relevant maker of sporting luxury saloons, something that it still excels at today in the form of the 7 Series.

The two initial models were the 2500 and 2800 with their names denoting from the engine size and suffix ‘L' or ‘I' to indicate long wheels base or fuel injection. Both inline six engines used twin two-barrel Zenith carburettors until the introduction of the fuel injection models. The 3.0S was introduced with more power using twin carburetor or via fuel injection. The car was praised for its sporting ability. Nearly all utilised a 4 speed manual gearbox to retain the sporty characteristics and the options list included an LSD. Many praise the E3 3.0S for its handling ability, some say on a par if not better than the E9 CSL

A two door version was also produced alongside the saloon, known as the E9 coupe. Both the E3 and E9 were the first time BMW had used E codes to designate production cars, a tradition that has been widely accepted by car magazines and enthusiasts alike to reference the manufacturers' models. EXTERIOR

This rare 3.0Si left the factory in Polaris silver and it still to this day retains the same colour. The car was subject to a restoration in 2003 and has been repainted again in the last 5 years so it still retains a fresh gleaming finish that looks great. Many of the trim, waist mouldings and badges have been replaced recently with a huge file of receipts for these parts in the history file. The chrome bumpers are in good condition as are the light surrounds, front lights and kidney grill.

INTERIOR

The interior on this Si is in incredible condition, the door cards and dash remain largely unmarked and while the seats have been reconolised in their time they are comfortable, sumptuous and plush, like BMW intended for its luxury sporting saloon. This car was fitted with BMW's air conditioning system of the era which has recently been serviced and modernised to take the current specification of gas, as such it blows ice cold air into the well appointed cabin without effecting the original look and feel of this beautiful interior.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine was subject to a full rebuild in early 2000 which included rebuilding and gas flowing the original head. The car was then setup on its L-Jetronic fuel injection system with the correct air/fuel mixture by Southern carburetters and injection and as such it still runs and drives like a dream having completed many a trip across some of Europe's best roads, the engine has covered 22K miles since its rebuild.

The 4 speed gearbox works smoothly and retains the sporty nature of this executive sports saloon. The clutch was replaced in 2007 and has only covered 6K miles since and the dampers refreshed and replaced the year before.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This Si retains its 14 inch BMW alloys that are in great condition, on very close inspection they have some light kerb scuffs. The calipers have been refurbished and rebuilt in 07 and as such still stop the car effectively and correctly.

HISTORY FILE

Originally supplied to the UK in 1976 this Si has had 6 keepers over the last 36 years. The current keeper has owned the car since 1999 and has pampered it whilst enjoying this hugely capable and enjoyable sports saloon regularly on the roads in the UK and Europe.

The history file is packed full of receipts from the last 13 years showing regular servicing and copious part purchases from BMW main dealers and specialist suppliers.
