MODEL HISTORY

Launched at the 1985 Amsterdam Motor Show the E28 M5 was the fastest production saloon car of its time.

Lurking under the bonnet and disguised by its subtle looks was the mighty M88 engine, a modified unit from the BMW M1 and the same engine BMW used in the M6s of the era. A product demanded by those looking for the performance of a sports car but the practicality of a saloon car the  E28 M5 was the first of many incarnations utilising this combination.

Handbuilt by a special team of BMWs finest technicians early models started life in BMWs original Preussenstrasse location near BMW AG headquarters in Munich until in late 1986 when production was moved to the newly opened BMW Motorsport headquarters in Garching.

A mere 187 RHD M5s were produced from 3/86 to 11/87.

Equipment

Electric sliding sunroof,  Rear-seat head restraints, Headlight wash wipe, 16" X-spoke alloy wheels, Graduated tinted screen, Rear window blind, Electric leather seats, Air conditioning, Electric mirrors, Rear M-tech spoiler, Pioneer tape player.

EXTERIOR

This E28 M5 is finished in Zinnober Red which is a great combination with the chrome bumpers and black leather.

The last owner had done a great job of keeping the car in fine mechanical shape but the paintwork was starting to look a little tired, no major rust other than a little light corrosion on the inside edges of the wheel arches and a small bubble on the edge of the windscreen. The front had quite a few stone chips so we decided to treat the car at www.355international.com/dunsfold  to a full strip down and glass out re-spray. They are always our preferred body shop due to their fantastic reputation and incredible attention to detail, the paintwork now is beautifully smooth with a lovely deep shine.

When the car was put back together we replaced any parts that were showing signs of age including; both windscreen mouldings, all four door handles and all badges to name a few.

INTERIOR

The black leather interior remains in excellent condition and all the electrics work as they should. None of the plastic trim has been damaged. The carpets and the boot remain very clean.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This car has an amazing history file so it is possible to read in great detail how well the car has been looked after, it has a huge pile of receipts and 41 stamps in the book! The timing chain was replaced at 113k miles and the last service was carried out in September of this year.

The engine runs very smoothly and pulls well throughout the rev range, these engines really come to life over 4,000rpm and produce an addictive howl. The gearbox feels tight and precise and shifts easily through the gears.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car comes with its factory 16" cross spoke alloys that have all been fully refurbished and have had new BMW centre badges fitted. They are all shod in a matching set of Pirelli P6000 tyres that all have plenty of tread left.

The car had the brake fluid flushed and all the discs and pads replaced at the last service in September this year.

HISTORY FILE

This M5 was first registered in April 1987 and for the first 5 years the car was serviced at BMW main dealers. The current owner then purchased the car in 1992 with 37k on the clock and has had it serviced at the same specialist garage ever since. It has a total of 41 service stamps, the first 16 BMW and the last 25 are all from the same specialist. These are then all backed up with a box file full of all the old service receipts that go right back to the original bill of sale. The file also includes all the old MOT certificates and the original document holder with the owners manuals.
