MODEL HISTORY
The Triumph Roadster was the first post war car from Britain's Triumph Motor Company and was produced from 1946 to 1948.
The car was designed in the closing days of World War II and with early post war steel shortages the body was built from aluminium using rubber press tools that had been used for making parts for the Mosquito bomber. The engine was based on a 1.5 Litre, four cylinder Standard design which had been supplied to Jaguar. A four speed gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios was used.
The tubular steel chassis featured transverse leaf sprung independent suspension at the front and a live axle with elliptic springs at the rear.
The cars width helped to accommodate the three-abreast seating and adoption of this led to a column gear shift to make space. Additional room for two was provided at the rear in a Dickery seat with its own folding windscreen.
During the 80's and 90's Bergerac in the the long running BBC series hit the trails of villains, murderers, spies and smugglers in a Triumph Roadster with the island of Jersey providing the backdrop.
Equipment
Driver and passenger wing mirrors, Oil pressure gauge, Water temperature gauge, Crank handle, Column gear shift, Tyre pump, Dash Clock, Dickery Seat.
EXTERIOR
This Roadster is finished in an incredibly smart coat of Burgundy red. This looks great against the large front chrome grill and on the wide wing extensions. The paint work looks clean and smart from a distance however on close inspection it shows more of an aged patina with some areas that could be tidied up. All the chrome work is in good condition and the car has a lovely classic feel.
INTERIOR
The interior is in fine fettle with all the wood work clean and tidy. The large leather bench seat and door cards are in excellent condition with no rips or tears. Sadly the steering wheel is starting to show its 65 years with a couple of cracks and splits. The boot plays host to the Dickery seats, the operation to open this compartment is simple and straight forward however getting in via the step on the rear bumper is a little more tricky. The hood is in good condition and keeps the worst of the weather out.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The four cylinder engine fires up with ease but then needs warming up before anything is asked of it. The column gear shift takes a while to get used to but with some gentle manouvering the car slots into gear nicely.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The tyres are in great condition and the car has had replacement shock absorbers, steering arms and a brake overhaul so rides, steers and stops as Triumph intended it too.
HISTORY FILE
The original Triumph 1800 Instruction book is present along with an updated Drivers instruction book produced by the Triumph Roadster Club. The present owner has had the car for over 18 years and the car has only ever had 4 other owners in its 65 year life.
Over the past 18 years the car has been serviced and looked after by an independent local mechanic with experience in classic Triumphs. It has just received a fresh 12 month MOT and is ready to use and enjoy.
