A fantastic 2 owner GTi with only 61k on the clock

MODEL HISTORY

The VW Golf Mk2 succeeded the Mk1 from 1983 and remained in production until late 1992. Volkswagen reportedly spent £500 million developing the Mk2. The car slightly grew in wheelbase, exterior and interior dimensions over its predecessor but still retained the overall look of the MK1 albeit slightly more rounder so to improve aerodynamics and reduce drag. During the life of the Mk2 there were a variety of updates and revisions to styling and trim, the most notable was the introduction of the 'big bumpers' introduced in the European market during the August 1989 facelift.

The success of the Mk1 GTi was continued with the sporty Mk2 GTi and to capitalise on the world wide success of the MK1 GTi. Volkswagen chose to release the Mk2 GTi in the same year as the rest of the fleet. The Mk2 featured a 1.8litre 8v engine but also a second engine choice, a slightly more powerful 16v variant followed shortly, the 8v displaying good low down torque and driveability while the 16v enjoyed high revs and more top end power. During its midlife update the 8v unit benefited from the introduction of a Digifant engine management system.

Popularity of the MK2 grew from the 1987 commercial "changes" in which Paula Hamilton bearing a close resemblance to Diana, Princess of Wales is seen leaving her husband, posting her wedding ring back through the letterbox, ditching her mink coat, throwing the house keys at the cat and dumping the pearl necklace BUT keeping the car keys - the tag line 'If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen'. The commercial was a hit and changed the way cars were advertised from then on. Click here to view the ad.

EXTERIOR

The Jade green paintwork is in excellent order with no signs of any corrosion or poor repairs, it has a lovely deep shine and the only imperfections are a few stone chips to the front end. The rubber trim is in good condition as are all the GTi sticker set and go faster stripes!

INTERIOR

This interior really is in first class order with no wear to the seat bolsters and unmarked trim. The boot looks like it has never had anything in it and still has the original VW build sticker. The back seats look like they have never been sat in and the carpets have been perfectly preserved under the original VW rubber mats. The only upgrade being a Sony CD player. The MFA computer is also in full working order.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This GTi has only covered 61,392 miles and comes with an excellent service history so is in fine mechanical condition. The car has just had a full service which included a replacement timing belt and tensioner. The gearbox feels tight and precise and has just benefited from a replacement gear linkage.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Rather than having the steel wheels refurbished we managed to source one of the last original 14" sets from VW with the correct centre caps so they are all in perfect new condition. All of the tyres have plenty of tread and the brakes where completely stripped and overhauled in 2008.

HISTORY FILE

This Mk2 GTi was first registered in September 1988 and stayed with its original owner for the first 20 years until he became too old to drive. During his ownership he had the car serviced on a regular basis all of which are recorded in the original VW service book. The current owner purchased the car in 2008 with 48k miles on the clock, he has continued to keep the car to an excellent standard and has kept all the receipts for work done in the history file. On arrival at 4 Star we carried out a full service that included a replacement timing belt and tensioner.

The car also comes with its original document holder that has the owners manuals and guides.
