MODEL HISTORY

The BMW 7 series was five years in production, starting in 1988 and the final design was approved by 1993. It was then unveiled in 1994 replacing the BMW E32. The E38 models were equipped with either a 5-speed ZF automatic gearbox or a manual transmission. There were many engine variants available from the 725tds, 735i to the 750i. BMW also produced a rare flagship vehicle with a mighty 5.4L 240kW engine which was also shared by the Rolls-Royce Silver Seraph. Protection line armoured vehicles were built between 2000 and 2001 which included light body armour, bullet-resistant glass and run-flat tyres. The 7 series were also the first cars to be fitted with automotive HID lamps which are commonly known as xenon headlamps.

The E38 featured plenty of standard and optional equipment such as a 6 disc sound system which had 14 speakers and 4 sub-woofers discreetly placed through out the car, a power moon-roof, on-board computer with navigation and TV monitor, rain-sensing wipers. The continuous-motion Active Comfort Seat technology was introduced in 1998 to improve comfort and reduce fatigue for the driver and front passenger.

Towards the end of production in 2001 there was a sharp rise in sales of the E38 as people wanted to buy before the car was to be replaced by the E65 which was not initially well-received by the public, mainly due to styling tastes. The knock on effect saw used E38's increase in popularity and value.  An M-Sport version was built that bridged the gap for an M-Limo that made for the best driving E38 7 Series with 50/50 weight distribution.

The E38's popularity continued to grow due to many appearances in main-stream Hollywood movies such the James Bond film 'Tomorrow never dies' which featured a 740iL that was re-badged as a 750iL. Sixteen E38's were used in the film and modified to be driven from the back seat. A 735i was also used in 'The transporter' which was a one off manual 750i badged as a 735i.

2001 was the final year of E38 sales with production ending in July 2001. The last E38 being a silver 740i with black leather interior rolled off BMW's assembly line on July 27, 2001.
