Model History

The Audi B5 RS4 was introduced by Audi in late 1999 as the successor to the Audi RS2 Avant. The vehicle, like its RS2 predecessor, was available only as an Avant and was built on an existing platform, in this case the Volkswagen Group B5 platform shared with the A4 and S4. Although related to the Audi B5 S4, many of the outer body panels were altered, with wider front and rear wheel arches to allow for the wider axle track on the RS4. With unique front and rear bumpers, side sills, and the rear spoiler from the S4 Avant, not only did the RS4 look the part but also the aerodynamic modifications achieved a drag coefficient of Cd 0.34.

The engine was developed from the 2.7-litre 90° V6 'bi-turbo' used in the B5 S4. It displaced 2,671cc and had five valves per cylinder. This engine was developed and manufactured in the UK by Cosworth Technology. It featured an enlarged intake and smaller exhaust ports on the two Cosworth cast aluminium alloy cylinder heads, two parallel BorgWarner K04-series turbochargers, two larger side-mounted intercoolers, dished piston crowns, stronger connecting rods, larger intake ducting, enlarged exhaust system and a re-calibrated engine management system. The modifications increased the engine's output from 261hp and 295 lb ft of torque in S4 to a mighty 375hp 325 lb ft of torque.

Even with a curb weight of 1,620 kilograms the RS4's powerful engine gave it exhilarating performance with 60mph coming up in 4.9 seconds.

Brakes were developed jointly in house by Audi's quattro GmbH, not by Porsche as with the RS2. At the front they were radially vented and floating cast iron discs, 360mm diameter and 32mm thick with double-piston floating calipers; at the rear they were 312mm by 22mm discs with a single-piston floating caliper. The RS4 needed less than 50m to come to a full stop from a speed of 68mph.

Audi produced 6,030 units between 1999 and 2001 of which it is believed that only 400 right-hand drive cars were supplied to the UK.

Exterior

This rare B5 Avant is finished in Brilliant Black and boasts a deep metallic flake, a perfect complement to the aggressive stance and muscular physique of the RS4. The paintwork on this example is very good and is virtually free from any swirl marks or chips, especially to the front end. Furthermore, down both sides the car is arrow straight and the anodised aluminium trim retains a good finish. The badges are also in great order and the light clusters show no signs of any moisture or cracking.

Interior

The interior is a great place to be, with the body-hugging Recaro sports seats providing excellent support with a luxurious finish. The silver-coloured Silk Nappa leather is a marvelous contrast to the exterior paintwork, and is in extremely good order with almost no signs of wear or sagging to the bolsters. The dash is lifted with smart Piano Varnish trim, and the carpets are protected in the footwells by a set of Audi mats. The boot area is also very clean, and is complete with a handy dog guard.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Dressed in carbon fibre, the superb 2.7-litre V6 powerplant is very clean having been well maintained from new. There are nine stamps in the book with the most recent service having just been carried out in September this year. As with the rest of the car, all components and plastics are in fine order.

The bi-turbo engine provides a smooth and refined drive but when provoked provides a satisfying surge of torque and acceleration that rivals even the fastest sports cars. Power is transferred to all four wheels by a silky smooth six-speed manual gearbox.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 18-inch RS4 alloy wheels are in fantastic condition throughout, retaining a particularly smart polished finish. They are shod in matching set of Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, with plenty of tread on all four. The brakes show minimal wear and do an excellent job of pulling the car up quickly in a straight line.

History File

The rare right-hand drive RS4 was first registered in March 2001, and was supplied new by Links Audi, Macclesfield. It is present with a detailed history file to include the original RS4 leather document pack, all owner's manuals, the dealer-supplied service booklet, a raft of Audi and specialist invoices, MOT certificates, and various ownership documents from over the years. The car was most recently serviced in September this year, less than 1k miles ago.
