Model History

The E38 was the third generation of the BMW 7-Series, which was produced from 1995 to 2001. It replaced the E32 and was available with straight six, V8, and V12 engines. It was the first car available with curtain airbags. It was also the first European car to offer satellite navigation and the first BMW to offer an in-built television. The E38 was the first 7-Series to be available with a diesel engine.

New safety features included ASC+T traction control, headlight washers, and self-leveling low beam xenon HID headlamps. Side tubular airbags were fitted as standard equipment. Active Comfort Seats were introduced in 1998, to improve comfort and reduce fatigue for the driver and front passenger. This system used two fluid-filled bladders that alternated in height.

Other equipment included Electronic Damper Control (called EDC III), rain-sensing wipers, dual zone climate control, electric driver's seat adjustment, and electric steering wheel adjustment. The E38 could also be optioned with double glazed windows. Break resistant "security glass" was also available, and bulletproof glass was used for the Protection model.

The E38 facelift models were introduced in the 1999 model year. The major changes were revised headlights and taillights. The 735i engine was upgraded to the "technical update" (TU) version of the M62, featuring variable valve timing on the intake camshaft (single-VANOS). Electronic Stability Control also became standard across the range.

The Sport Package included a sports steering wheel, sports seats, sports suspension, "shadowline" exterior trim, and unique wood trim for the interior. Some sports models also included a shorter differential ratio and higher stall speed for the torque converter.

Equipment

Electric steering column adjustment, Driver and passenger airbags, M Sport Package (sports seats, sport suspension, M leather steering wheel, M parallel wheels), Shadowline trim, Electric sunroof, Sunblind for rear window, Electric memory seats, Front armrest, Front and rear heated seats, Xenon lights, Navigation system, 6 disc CD changer, Wood trim, Individual anthracite roof-lining, Wind deflectors, BMW first aid kit, M Parallel spare wheel, Spare key.

Exterior

This 7-Series is presented in Titanium Silver Metallic, a smart colour choice against the handsome E38 design. Factory specified with the M Sport Package, this example has a commanding presence on the road with the help of M Sport body styling, sports suspension, and M Parallel wheels. The bright paintwork retains a good metallic flake and is a nice contrast to the shadowline trim. There are a few age-related marks as to be expected but nothing untoward for the age or mileage. The light lenses are free from any moisture or cracks, and both front and rear bumpers are without any scrapes.

Interior

The interior space is upholstered with black leather and anthracite alcantara, showing only expected wear to the seat bases and bolsters; the rear seats are also very clean. The lustrous wood inlays are a lovely complement to the dark interior and present with few signs of major use. All switchgear retains a factory texture and operates as it should throughout.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 3.5-litre M62 V8 engine starts first turn of the key and idles up to temperature as it should. The engine bay retains a clean appearance with no signs of any damage, poor repair, or corrosion to any of the inner panels. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a smooth five-speed ZF automatic transmission, which performs well on test. The car was most recently serviced at 65k miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

This example sits on the desirable 18-inch M Parallel alloy wheels, as supplied with the M Sport package. The wheels with their striking polished lip remain in good original condition and only a few age related marks to be found. They are shod in Bridgestone tyres all round. Beneath the boot carpet you'll find a pristine spare M Parallel.

History File

The E38 was first registered in September 2001 and has now covered just 67k miles. The history file is complete with the original BMW document pack, dealer-supplied manuals, the V5C, and an MOT certificate until July 2018. The service booklet is present as well as a spare key.
