Model History

The BMW E39 is the fourth generation of BMW 5-Series, which was sold from 1995 to 2004. It was launched as a saloon with the estate (Touring) introduced in 1996. The E39 was replaced by the E60 in 2003, however E39 Touring models remained in production until 2004.

The E39 was the first 5-Series to use aluminium components in the front suspension. The proportion of chassis components using aluminium significantly increased for the E39 in order to reduce weight. It was also the first 5-Series where a four-cylinder diesel engine was available. Unlike its E34 predecessor and E60 successor, the E39 was not available with all-wheel drive.

At launch, the petrol engines consisted of the M52 straight six and M62 V8, which were both new engines at the time. In 1998, the "technical update" versions of these engines were introduced, which introduced double VANOS to increase torque at low rpm. At the 2000 facelift, the M52 straight-six engine was replaced by its successor the M54.

Both the saloon and the Touring offered even more space within the passenger compartment over the previous generation E34. Boasting features such as a multifunction steering wheel, navigation system, active seats, and Dynamic Stability Control, the BMW 5-Series was acknowledged as a particularly outstanding high-tech representative of its segment.

In the interest of enhanced driving dynamics and safety, the body came with a significant increase in torsional stiffness over the former model, and E39 was the first large-scale production car worldwide made almost completely of light alloy. The newly developed all-aluminium engines also helped to significantly reduce the weight of the car. The aerodynamic design of the E39 resulted in a drag coefficient of 0.28.

Exterior

Factory sports suspension, M Sport body styling, and a set of M Parallels ensure this E39 sits with a particularly commanding presence. The glossy Titanium Silver paintwork still retains a bright metallic finish throughout and is a nice contrast against the black trim and freshly tinted rear windows.

The bodywork is exceptionally clean and free from any significant blemishes. There are almost no chips to the front end, and all lenses remain crystal clear; the badges and rubbing strips are also in fine fettle. Subject only to salt-free roads from new, there is absolutely no corrosion to be found either to the car's body or underside. In fact, the E39 has just been treated to a full coat of clear waxoyl to ensure the underside remains in its original mint condition; detailed photographs are available upon request.

Interior

The anthracite alcantara and pinstripe velour have worn remarkably well, with almost no signs of age to the delicate bolsters. The dark fabric is perfectly offset by unmarked aluminum inlays throughout the interior, a welcome choice over the more commonly specified walnut veneer. The headlining is anthracite too, and maintains an intimate atmosphere within the cabin.

Smaller details such as the gear selector and steering wheel are still lovely and fresh with great factory textures. The switchgear is also free from any marking and operates just as it should. In the footwells the carpets are spotless, having been protected from new by the original BMW overmats. In the boot you'll find a retractable dog guard and load cover. There are no scrapes or scuffs to any of the luggage compartment trim or carpeting.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The 2.5-litre M54 straight-six starts first turn of the key and idles up to temperature nicely. The engine bay retains a fresh appearance with no signs of any damage, poor repair or corrosion to any of the inner panels. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a smooth five-speed automatic transmission that performs well on test. An Inspection II has just been carried out at a reputable BMW specialist.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

18-inch M Parallel wheels are the perfect complement to any E39. On this example the alloys remain in fantastic condition, free from any major wear or marking. The polished faces and rims look particularly smart against the Titanium Silver bodywork and really do set the car off nicely. A fresh set of Dunlop Sport Maxx tyres has recently been fitted.

History File

The E39 was first registered in December 2001. The history file is complete with the original leather document pack, all dealer-supplied manuals, the V5C, and an MOT until June 2018. The service book is present along with two spare keys and a handy valet key. Recent works include a full coating of clear waxoyl to the underside, and an Inspection II service at the current mileage.
