The fourth generation BMW M3 was announced at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show. Similar to previous M3 generations that introduced a new engine, the fourth generation M3 did the same: the BMW S65 V8 engine. The engine produced 414hp at 8,300 rpm, with peak torque of 295 lb ft at 3,900rpm. A six-speed manual transmission was standard but as of April 2008, BMW offered a new seven-speed Getrag double-clutch gearbox as well. The optional M-DCT (Double Clutch Transmission) reduces shift pauses to less than a tenth of a second. It features both automatic and manual modes similar to the SMG gearboxes in the E36 and E46, but with more speed and efficiency.
The E92 M3 coupe inherited a carbon-fibre roof similar to the one used on the E46 CSL. For 2011, the E92 M3 received an update with changes that included minor interior trim pieces and LED rear lights. Testing by Car and Driver magazine has shown that the 2011 M3 equipped with an M-DCT transmission accelerated from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
PalmerSport is a corporate driving event that was created in 1991 by Jonathan Palmer, ex-F1 driver and Chief Executive of MotorSport Vision. PalmerSport is based at Bedford Autodrome, a purpose-built motorsports venue created by Jonathan Palmer in 2000. The operators claim it to be "the best corporate driving event in the world", on the basis of their purpose-built facility, high-performance selection of cars (some completely exclusive and all specially modified) and rigorously selected instructors. The E92 M3 offered for sale here is one of ten highly specified examples used at PalmerSport between 2012 and 2015.
PalmerSport M3 GTP track spec: AP Racing 6-pot front calipers, AP Racing 4-pot rear calipers, BMW Performance racing seats, TRS 4-point harnesses, Bilstein springs, Roll cage, Carbon door panels, Carbon rear wing, BTB custom exhaust, BMW Performance flat-bottom steering wheel in alcantara, Carbon fibre roof, Handbrake delete, Automatic Xenon headlamps, Headlamp washer system, Automatic air conditioning, Rain sensor, Satellite navigation, Electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Electric parking brake.
Finished in its factory colour of Alpine White this E92 M3 track car presents extremely well throughout. It is one of just ten examples built to its current specification for use at the renowned PalmerSport facility. The body remains in very good order with few blemishes worthy of note, featuring a carbon roof and additional rear wing.
The stripped-out interior features a full bolt in roll cage, BMW Performance racing seats upholstered in alcantara with leather, carbon fibre door cards, and a flat bottom steering wheel also trimmed in alcantara. The hugely supportive seats are equipped with TRS 4-point harnesses and remain in excellent condition showing minimal wear. The carpets, sound deadening, handbrake, and glove compartment have been removed to reduce weight, although useful features such as the AC and satnav are still present.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
As an ex-PalmerSport M3 the car is running at 445hp and has been de-restricted to reach speeds of up to 185mph. The engine bay remains in an orderly state, with the 4.0 V8 sounding magnificent through the custom BTB exhaust. The double-clutch transmission performs faultlessly, shifting rapidly through each of the seven gears as required.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The car sits on an original set of 19-inch E92 alloys. The unblemished diamond-cut faces look particularly smart against the anthracite spokes, and really finish the car off nicely. The wheels are shod in a matching set of Yokohama Advan Neova tyres and the brakes are AP Racing front and rear; they are equipped with Pagid Endurance RS29 compound pads all round
he M3 was supplied by (and registered to) BMW UK Limited in April 2012. It is one of ten E92 M3 GTP track cars that were built specifically for use at the PalmerSport racecar driving facility. The car remained with PalmerSport until 2015 when their E92s were replaced by a fleet of new M4s. The V5C shows just one owner from new.
