The i8 is a plug-in hybrid sports car developed by BMW. First introduced as the Concept Vision EfficientDynamics, its design was heavily influenced by the BMW M1 Homage concept car, which in turn paid homage to BMW's last production mid-engined sports car, the legendary M1.
The i8 was released in Germany in June 2014. By early November 2016 global sales since mid-2014 totaled more than 10,000 i8s, making it the world's top selling plug-in electrified sports car. The top selling markets are the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany.
The production i8 was designed by Benoit Jacob. It features dihedral “butterfly” doors, a head-up display, and was also the first production car with laser headlights, reaching further than LED lights. It weighs just 1,485kg and has a low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.26. In all-electric ‘eDrive’ mode the i8 has a top speed of 75mph, and in Sport mode it delivers a mid-range acceleration from 50 to 75mph just in 2.6 seconds. The electronically controlled top speed is 155 mph. The electric two-speed drivetrain was developed and produced by GKN.

The i8’s ultramodern styling is accentuated with adaptive LED headlights and stylish dihedral doors. This one-owner example presents beautifully in the elegant paint scheme of Sophisto Grey Metallic with BMW i Blue accents. On close inspection there are very few blemishes to report, the most prominent being a light dusting of chips to the front end.
The sophisticated cabin space is lavishly upholstered in Carum Grey Spheric leather accented with Sitka cloth. Pale leather extends to the centre console and lower part of the dash, with the upper section finished in black. Despite being three years old the interior still feels like new. Both front seats appear unworn and all of the switchgear is perfectly fresh; even the steering wheel retains a superb shine-free finish. This example sports BMW i Blue seatbelts along with the desirable Driving Assistant package. In the footwells the carpets are still protected by the original overmats.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The i8 draws its power from both a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine towards the rear and powerful electric motor up front. This formidable combo enables swift acceleration from 0 to 62mph in little over 4 seconds whilst also providing a frugal combined fuel consumption of 134.5mpg with emissions of 49g/km of CO2. The car has also been remapped and now produces a hefty 411hp. It was most recently serviced at BMW at 14,639 miles.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Filling the arches of this example are the upgraded 20-inch Turbine-spoke (style 625) alloys in excellent condition. The wheels are wrapped in a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres, all with at least 5mm of tread remaining. The drilled discs still show plenty of meat left and the brake fluid was changed at BMW in December 2018 at 21k miles.
The i8 was registered to its first and only keeper in March 2016. Since that time it has driven just 22k miles. It was serviced at BMW at 14k miles and more recently has had the brake fluid changed at 21k miles. The MOT is valid until March 2020.
