Model History

The M Coupe was first unveiled at the 1997 Frankfurt motor show. As the M-developed version of the Z3 coupe it sported one of three 24-valve six-cylinder engines originally developed by the BMW M Division for the E36/E46 M3. It also had an M-tuned chassis and several unique cosmetic parts including a more aggressive front with brake cooling ducts in place of fog lights, unique side vents with the M logo, curved M door mirrors, a lower rear bumper with four exposed exhaust tips, and a repositioned rear number plate.

The first M Coupes, with engines from the E36 M3, were built from June 2000 with the S50 engine in both LHD and RHD, and with the S52 engine in LHD only. After having been discontinued for more than six months, a revised M Coupe entered production in February 2001. These versions featured the more powerful and advanced S54 engine from the E46 M3. Just 165 S54 examples were produced in right-hand drive making the example shown here the rarest of the rare.

The updated “S54” M Coupe entered production with the following changes/additions: 3.15:1 final drive, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Tyre pressure monitoring system, Revised gauges with grey backgrounds and revised graphics, Reshaped rearview mirror with chrome surround and auto-dimming function, Curved exterior M badges, and a Chrome Shadow finish for the RoadStar alloy wheels.

The interior of the M Coupe featured several unique items that included a chrome-ringed instrument cluster with red needles and an M logo on the tachometer, three auxiliary gauges in the centre console, heated sport seats with special pleated leather trim, a 375mm three-spoke M steering wheel with tri-color stitching and colour-matched accents, an illuminated M leather shift knob with the M logo on the shift pattern, an oval-shaped rear-view mirror, Nappa leather door pulls and centre console trim, chrome interior door handles, and door sill plates with the “M” logo.

Depending on the market and production date, factory options for the M Coupe included side airbags, headlight washers, electric front seats, cruise control, rear partition net and load cover, electric sliding sunroof, various radios, and a Harmon/Kardon audio system.

The M Coupe’s Titanium Silver paintwork presents to an excellent standard all over. The provocative styling is unspoiled by any major blemishes or marks, a real testament to the car’s careful ownership from new. There are very few stone chips to the front end with none of the usual road rash to those voluptuous rear hips. All lights remain clear and moisture-free and the chrome trim is still bright; the current owner has even had the rear silencers removed and professionally polished for an impeccable finish.


The cabin space retains an outstanding fresh appearance and has more in common with a car having driven half the mileage. The full black Nappa leather upholstery has worn extremely well showing few signs of wear or age, even to the driver’s bolsters. On closer inspection there is no marking to any of the switchgear or delicate centre console trim. Commonly worn details such as the steering wheel and gear knob still present beautifully. In the foot-wells you’ll find original velour overmats, and in the boot the retractable load cover is retained.


The coveted S54 engine is really what makes this car so special. The 3.2-litre naturally aspirated straight six found its way into just 165 right-hand drive M Coupes, making this example a rare beast indeed. The S54’s raspy exhaust note is intoxicating at high revs and the slick manual gearbox is the perfect partner.

This example has clearly been cherished all its life. The car boasts an all-BMW main dealer service history, the most recent service being an Inspection I at 67k miles by Vines in Guildford. At this time the car was also given a clean bill of health with all items on the Visual Health Check marked green.


The 17-inch dished alloys present immaculately in their Chrome Shadow paint with no curb marking to be found. They are wrapped in a matching set of Continental ContiSport tyres with plenty of tread remaining. In April 2015 the car was treated to new Bilstein shocks with H & R springs. The brake discs and pads were replaced all round at 67k miles at a cost of £880.

History File

The M Coupe was registered to its first keeper in November 2001; it has had just 3 subsequent keepers. It was originally sold through Castle Motors York who also carried out the running-in check and first main service. All subsequent stamps in the service book are from BMW main dealers, the last being Vines for an Inspection I at 67k miles. The paperwork boasts a raft of main dealer and specialist invoices plus every MOT certificate since 2006. Along with the original handbooks and leather pouch you’ll also find documentation from when the car was sold through Hexagon at three years old. The service booklet is stamped at the following mileages: 1k, 8k, 21k, 25k, 29k, 41k, 57k, 62k, 67k.
