Model History

The Jaguar S type was known for its style, build quality, and exclusivity. It was released in 1999 and was internally known as the X200. When the S-Type R came out in 2002 it was the fastest 4-door saloon in the world. Powered by a 4.2-litre supercharged and hand-built V8 with 400hp, the S-Type R was able to reach 60mph in 5.3 seconds and if de-limited it would reach 191mph; from the factory it was limited it to 155mph.

The R received many exterior upgrades over the standard S-Type, which included new side skirts, a spoiler, a wire mesh grille, rear apron, and a front apron with integrated fog lamps. The car also featured R badges on the boot lid and front wings.

It was built to rival the BMW M5 and Mercedes E55 AMG. Providing the same luxury and performance as these cars it really gave them a run for their money. Further on down the line on the supercharger was revised to produce an extra 20hp from the engine. The 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox provided smooth but swift changes. As well as being the fastest production saloon in its day, the S-Type R was also one of the most luxurious in its class. Production ended in 2007.

Official Jaguar figures for the S-Type R show a total of just 1,274 cars were produced for the UK market. The numbers manufactured in each year are as follows: 2001 – 3, 2002 – 520, 2003 – 205, 2004 – 107, 2005 – 163, 2006 – 147, 2007 – 129.

19-inch BBS Barcelona alloy wheels, 6-speed electronic automatic transmission, Electronic handbrake, R suspension with Computer Active Technology Suspension (CATS), R performance disc brakes with four-piston calipers, Headlight powerwash, Heated front windscreen, Rear spoiler, Unique R bumpers, Bright mesh grille, Black window surrounds, Xenon headlights, Rear parking sensors, R leather-trimmed steering wheel, Aluminium fascia and door trims, R leather upholstery, Memory function for driver’s seat/door mirrors/steering column, Heated R front seats, Automatic dual zone climate control, Multi-function steering wheel controls, Jaguar Alpine sound system, Satellite Navigation system with touch-screen, Bluetooth, Jaguar rubber floor mats, Spare key.

This rare super-saloon is finished in elegant Liquid Silver pearlescent. The exclusive R body styling really sets it apart from the standard S-Type without appearing at all garish or overstated. Free from any conspicuous blemishes the body and paintwork still present to an excellent standard all over. The car is perfectly straight along both sides and there are only a handful of stone chips to the front end. All badges and trim retain a fresh appearance and the light clusters are moisture-free.

The interior is fine order throughout and is more in line with a car having covered half the mileage. The black leather upholstery is supple to the touch with only the tiniest of wear to the driver’s bolster worthy of note. The leather retains a nice factory texture, with no shininess or major sagging to report. Furthermore, all the electric functionality works just as it should and offers plenty of adjustability at the touch of a button. The memory function for the driver’s seat also applies to the door mirrors and steering column, which is a nice touch.

Looking closer there is no marking to any of the internal trim. The steering wheel is practically unworn and the touch-screen satnav is without any dead pixels. The luxurious cabin is highly specified with plenty of equipment even by modern standards, and in the foot-wells a set of protective rubber Jaguar mats can still be found.

The supercharged 4.2 fires into life with that familiar V8 murmur. The hand-built powerplant produces a lovely tone throughout the rev range and sends 400hp to the rear wheels. It is paired with Jaguar’s excellent electronic 6-speed automatic transmission, which has held up very well and still provides quick but smooth changes. The car was most recently serviced at 55k miles.

As a later example, this S-Type sits on its factory 19-inch BBS Barcelona rims. They complement the R body styling well and help to maintain an aggressive look, finished off nicely with red Jaguar centre badges. All the wheels are in great condition with no signs of any curb marking or age-related wear, and the tyres still have ample tread remaining.
