Model History

The ‘TJ’ Wrangler was the second generation of Jeep Wrangler. Introduced at the 1996 Detroit Auto Show it succeeded the YJ Wrangler as a 1997 model, also reintroducing the circular headlights that classic Jeep models had been known for.

Instead of leaf springs, the TJ featured modern coil-spring suspension front and rear, based on that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, for better ride and handling. The engine was also the same 4-litre AMC straight-6 used in the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee. A 2.5-litre AMC inline-4 engine was available on entry-level models until 2002 when it was replaced by the Chrysler 2.4-litre in 2003. The TJ version of the Wrangler is also notable for being the last production vehicle to use AMC-related parts.

The 4-litre AMC straight-6 was a perfect engine for the Wrangler. It was small and light enough to fit the Wrangler’s mountain-goat-like approach to off-roading. It also had enough torque to handle hills, rocks, and mud without feeling overpowered and unsafe for the road. The TJ Wrangler (and the YJ for that matter) also had an ideal wheelbase for nimble off-road driving while still being long enough to remain stable at higher speeds.

Equipment

Impact Orange paintwork, Dark grey cloth upholstery, 6-speed manual transmission, Original 15-inch steel wheels in silver, Removable soft-top in black, 4-wheel-drive system, Power-assisted steering, Air conditioning, Cruise control, Folding rear seats, Side steps, Chrome headlamp bezels, Rear mud flaps, Removable doors, Folding windscreen, Front carpet mats, Padded roll bars, Rear-mounted spare wheel with Jeep cover.

Exterior

Having resided on Japan’s unsalted roads since new, this manual 4-litre Sport remains in excellent rust-free condition throughout, especially the underside. Amazingly original with its factory arches, side steps, and rear mud flaps still fitted, it really looks the part. The vibrant orange paintwork presents to an excellent standard following a machine polish by our in-house detailer, the only real negatives to report being a few minor chips in the paint and some wear to a couple of the plastic arches.

Interior

Inside, the upholstery presents well with no significant wear to report, and certainly nothing untoward for the age and mileage. The door cards, centre console and gear knob also look great, with only a small amount marking visible on the glove box lid and around the outer egde of the steering wheel. In the footwells the carpets are free from any stains having always been protected by a set of mats, and in the dash you’ll still find the original Jeep CD player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The Sport's 4-litre straight-six starts up first turn of the key and idles smoothly up to temperature. Lifting the bonnet, the engine bay is extremely clean, remaining in superb original condition with no signs of any rust, damage or previous poor repair.

The diff and 4x4 system all work as they should, although given the condition of the vehicle they have probably seen little use. The desirable 6-speed manual ‘box is surprisingly smooth and handles the engine's power perfectly through the gears. Since arriving with us the car has been freshly MOT’d for the new keeper’s peace of mind. We will also be having a fresh service carried out upon sale.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Wrangler sits on its factory 15-inch steels all in good original condition with only some age-related wear to report; a perfectionist may choose to refurb. They are shod in matching Bridgestone all-terrain tyres with plenty of tread left all round. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, stopping the car quickly and in a straight line.
