Model History

The Phoenix was based on a standard Mk2 MX-5. Only 1,200 units were produced from March 2002, and it was available in both 1.6-litre and 1.8-litre form. This special version was finished in Brilliant Black as standard and sported 15-inch Enkei alloy wheels with low-profile tyres and locking wheel nuts. An optional Titanium Grey Mica paint finish was also available at extra cost. The interior featured heated seats trimmed in Sienna Brown leather. A two-tone Nardi steering wheel was also fitted with a black leather hand brake grip and gear knob. Further enhancements included alloy-effect dash trims for the centre console and air vent bezels. This model saw the introduction of the new Modular audio system, and the Phoenix also included a CD upgrade and two extra speakers as found in the higher specification 1.8iS models.

Equipment

Titanium Grey Mica paintwork, Sienna Brown leather upholstery, 15-inch Enkei alloy wheels, Removable hard top in Titanium Grey Mica, Folding soft-top in black with heated rear screen, Heated seats, Two-tone leather Nardi steering wheel, Leather handbrake and gear knob, Alloy-effect dash trim, Modular audio system, CD upgrade with 2 extra speakers, Electric aerial, Electric windows, Electric door mirrors, Power steering, ABS, Alarm, Driver and passenger air bags.

Exterior

This amazing 5k mile MX-5 remains in true time-warp condition. Everything is original including the dealer-supplied front and rear number plates and rear window sticker. The paintwork presents in remarkable condition and is almost completely without fault other than a few very small stone chips in-line with the mileage. The paint finish retains a deep glossy shine and looking down the sides she is arrow straight. Looking around the rest of the car all the plastic trims and rubber seals are in excellent condition, the only negative being a slight paint reaction on the edge of the aluminium door trims. The car comes with an immaculate factory hardtop and the soft-top also remains in perfect condition. The underside is in excellent original condition.

Interior

The time-warp theme continues inside where you are presented with immaculate Sienna Brown leather seats showing only the lightest of wear on the edge of the driver’s bolster. The steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever all look brand new, as do the centre console, dashboard, and door cards. The only other imperfections we could see was a little discolouration to the cigarette lighter button (which has never been used) and a small mark on the internal handle of the driver’s door. The carpets are all pristine and still protected by the original supplying Mazda dealer mats. All the switchgear is immaculate and everything works as it should. The boot area is also very clean, and under the carpet you will find the original space saver wheel with all the tools that appear unused.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay presents extremely well with no signs of any corrosion. The gold factory wax is still intact and there’s only a little oxidisation to the aluminium components. Despite such low mileage the car has been kept in regular use by its owner and, having always been maintained to the highest standards, it such drives extremely well – probably as close as you will get to driving a brand new Mk2! We have also just had the cambelt replaced at the current mileage for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

When the car arrived the alloys were free of any curb marks but there was a little discolouration to the lacquer on the inside of the rims, and so we have had them all professionally refurbished by Lepsons. They are shod in Bridgestone tyres all round, each of which have plenty of tread remaining. All of the breaking and suspension components were checked on our inspection and everything remains in excellent serviceable condition.

History File

Despite its low mileage this MX-5 has been kept in regular use which is fully documented in the history file. The original document pack is still with the car and the service booklet has nine service stamps, the first four from the supplying Mazda main dealer, and the others from a well-known MX-5 specialist. The last service was carried out in November 2021 and included a diff and gearbox fluid check. Most recently we have just had the cambelt replaced at the current mileage. The book is stamped with the following entries:

2003 – 333 miles
2004 – 520 miles
2005 – 680 miles
2006 – 760 miles
2010 – 1,042 miles
2014 – 1,066 miles
2017 – 1,957 miles
2019 – 3,749 miles
2021 – 5,032 miles

The history file also contains old MOT certificates to further verify the low mileage and the last four service invoices detailing the work that was carried out. The current owner has had the car since it was six weeks old with the first registered keeper being the supplying Mazda dealer.
