Model History

Designed and built as a grand tourer the SL was first introduced in 1954. The designation SL derives from the German "Sport Lightweight" and was first applied to the 300SL Gullwing. The SL model range is still in production today and has spanned five generations of models from 1954 to the present day.

The R129 as featured here is the fourth generation of car and was built from 1989-2002. Featuring a shorter wheelbase and updated rear suspension over its predecessor, the R107, the R129 was quick to introduce model updates and featured a large amount of styling, mechanical, and technological updates over its 12 year life span.

The R129 shot to the public's attention in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar to purchase a 500SL. This sparked a media storm as this was the first time a member of the royal family had chosen a foreign car. The media questioned whether British royalty should be driving foreign cars and eventually due to pressure she was forced to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992. The car now features in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

Exterior

This attractive facelift SL has covered just 25k miles from new. The car's outstanding, rust-free condition is perfectly in keeping with its low mileage. There are almost no stone chips to the front end and the Brilliant Silver paint still retains a lustrous metallic finish. The car is equipped with an unmarked electric soft-top and a pristine hard top for the winter months.

Interior

The fine Nappa leather remains in exquisite condition showing no signs of major use. The upholstery is in soft, supple condition having never been re-connolised or allowed to dry out in the sun. The well-appointed cabin also sports an unmarked walnut centre console equipped with most of the luxuries one can expect from a Mercedes of this era. All the switchgear is still pleasingly solid to operate, and all features work just as they should. The seats are electrically adjustable and heated, and the carpets are protected in the foot-wells by spotless overmats. In the boot you'll find a Mercedes CD changer and beneath the carpet, an unused spare wheel.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The smooth V6 is an excellent complement to the R129 SL. Under the bonnet of this example you'll find a pristine engine bay with no signs of any damage or poor repair. All panels remain free from corrosion and all plastics appear factory fresh. The car performs beautifully on test, pulling well and shifting through the five gears exactly as required. It will be serviced upon sale for the new keeper's peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The SL sits on smart 17-inch Mercedes Sador alloys. They are wrapped in a matching set of Bridgestone tyres, all with plenty of tread remaining. The wheels present in good, clean condition with only a few discreet marks to note. They are very presentable throughout although a perfectionist may choose to refurb for a perfect factory finish. On test, the brakes feel strong and bring the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

The SL was first registered in January 1999. The history file is present with the original leather Mercedes document pack and all dealer-supplied manuals. Despite its very low mileage the car has been well maintained, and clearly well stored when not in use. The service booklet is complete with a number of maintenance records and the car will also be freshly serviced upon sale.
