Model History

The W126 was a series of S-Class models manufactured from 1979 to 1992. This made it the longest generation S-Class, with a production span of 12 years. The cars were offered with either straight six, V8, or turbocharged diesel engines.

With this generation of S-Class, Mercedes set out to improve the efficiency and aerodynamics over and above that of its predecessor. They achieved this through the use of lighter materials and wind tunnel testing. The W126 took six years of rigorous testing to develop before being unveiled. Mercedes really took their time to perfect the car, which is evident at first glance.

The SEL models were at the top of the range offering a long wheelbase design. The SE and SD (SD being the diesel) models featured the normal wheelbase. They went from a base model 280 up to the 500. The cars were known to be well built, safe, and ahead of their time. The 420SE was one of the later models produced from 1985-1991. It was equipped with 4.2-litre V8 producing 228hp.

Exterior

The Nautical Blue coachwork presents beautifully throughout, maintaining a sharp metallic flake across each of the glossy panels. The paintwork remains in great condition overall with no significant blemishes to report. Most importantly there is no corrosion in any of the usual weak spots. The contrasting lower trim is finished in satin Andor Blue, which looks magnificent against the upper body and provides that classic Mercedes two-tone finish.

Interior

Much like the exterior, the interior of this W126 is in remarkable, mileage-defying condition. There are absolutely no signs of any wear to the luxurious grey velour upholstery, all of which presents in beautiful unmarked condition. The complementary pale grey carpets still maintain a fresh appearance having been protected in the foot-wells by a set of rubber Mercedes floor mats.

This well specified example benefits from many factory optional extras including velour (over the standard cloth), electrically adjustable and heated front seats, cruise control, air conditioning, as well as the original Becker Mexico cassette radio (costing over £1,200 back in 1990).

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine bay is in fine fettle and presents in wonderfully clean condition. The 4.2-litre V8 starts without fuss and idles quietly up to temperature. On test the engine pulls well through the rev range and the gear changes are silky smooth, even by modern standards. The Mercedes is complete with a full service history boasting seventeen stamps in the original maintenance booklet. It was most recently serviced in January 2018 at 75,538 miles.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The car sits on its original 15-inch steels with the correct Mercedes wheel trims, all of which remain in superb condition having never required refurbishment. They are shod in a matching set of Continental tyres with plenty of tread all round.
