The 987 Cayman was launched in September 2005. The aim of the car was to bridge the gap between the Boxster and the 911. Porsche’s objective was to make the Cayman more of driver-focused car compared to the Boxster. Some people regarded the Cayman to be an even better car than the 911, with its lower price and mid-engine setup. The 987 came in two model variants, which included the base Cayman with a 2.7-litre 245hp engine, and the S with a 3.4-litre engine and 291hp.
Out on the road the Cayman stands out against other Porsches. With its mid-engine coupe proportions, the Cayman has a stance of its own. It also has perfect weight distribution, a beautifully made interior, and decent luggage space. All this means a great all round sports car. When new, the Cayman rivalled cars like the BMW Z4 M Coupe and the Mercedes SLK55 AMG. It provided a more practical but also driver-focused approach, and definitely gave those cars some serious competition.
19-inch Lobster Claw alloy wheels, UK specification, Automatic transmission, Sports steering wheel trimmed in leather, Graduated tint windscreen, Air conditioning, Kenwood head unit (original present), Leather upholstery, Rear parking sensors, Warning triangle.
The crisp Arctic Silver paintwork maintains a clean appearance around the Cayman’s flowing physique. The body is in good order throughout and boasts a scuff-free finish, with only a few discreet blemishes to the front end worthy of note. Better still, the rear arches show no signs of any road rash, and there are no unsightly dents either side to speak of.
The interior retains a premium feel and still holds up well by today’s standards. There is only very light wear to the driver’s bolster and certainly nothing unexpected for the age or mileage. Other than that the comfortable sports seats present nicely, with the upholstery still notably supple.
Trimmed in leather the sports steering wheel, gear selector and handbrake lever are largely unworn. The switchgear also feels fresh and there are few of the usual scratches to the delicate plastic trim. In the dash an upgraded Kenwood multimedia unit has been fitted, although the original is included with the car should the new owner decide to re-fit.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 3.4-litre flat six of the Cayman S delivers a great amount of power along with that distinctive Porsche soundtrack. At 71k miles the engine was stripped and fully rebuilt at a cost of £4,400. The work was carried out in September 2017 at Revolution Porsche. Having covered less than 1,500 miles since that time the Cayman presents in excellent fettle, with none of the ‘bore score’ issues commonly associated with these engines.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The car sits on upgraded 19-inch lobster claw alloys that fill the arches perfectly. The wheels are in good, presentable condition although a perfectionist may choose to refurb. The bright red calipers appear in excellent condition all round, with no unsightly lacquer peel to report. Four-wheel alignment was carried out at 71k miles.
This Cayman S was first registered in April 2006 and was supplied new by Porsche Centre Glasgow. The leather document pack includes all the original handbooks, and the dealer-supplied service booklet is complete with seven Porsche/Porsche Specialist entries. The final record documents the full engine rebuild that was carried out in September 2017 at 71k miles, details of which are specified on the included invoice.
