Model History

Launched in Japan with the WRX badge, the turbocharged Impreza was good for 240hp, with official UK sales beginning in late 1994. To conform to UK regulations, the engine was retuned to 208hp and the car was badged as the Impreza Turbo 2000 AWD. This coincided neatly with Ford’s decision to pull out of the performance saloon market and so many Sapphire and Escort Cosworth owners soon switched to the Japanese marque.

Engines were revised for 1997 and the Japanese domestic market cars now boasted up to 280hp, but the standard UK spec remained 208hp. In 1998 minor engine changes were claimed to improve torque and reduce turbo lag without altering the output.

The first-generation Impreza was replaced by the second-generation ‘GD8’ car for 2001 complete with its rather odd ‘bug eye’ styling. An equally competent car, it somehow lacked the character of the original and although popular has yet to gain modern classic appeal in the same way.

Royal Silver Metallic paintwork, Dark grey leather sports seats, 16-inch alloy wheels, 5-speed manual transmission, Air conditioning, AWD, Momo leather steering wheel, Leather gear knob, Height-adjustable driver’s seat, Electric windows, Electrically-adjustable door mirrors, Rear spoiler with integrated third brake light, Front fog lamps, Subaru cassette radio, Original Turbo 2000 carpet mats, Subaru rubber mats, Subaru headlamp protectors (not fitted), Remote central locking with immobiliser, Space saver spare wheel.

Finished in a lustrous coat of Royal Silver Metallic, the body of this low mileage UK-supplied Impreza is free from any corrosion or unsightly blemishes, the paint retaining a deep shine across every panel. The car presents in excellent unmodified condition throughout with only a handful of light stone chips at the front end as evidence of its 26k miles. There are no scrapes to either of the bumpers, it’s arrow-straight along both sides, and all the black trims remain looking fresh with no sun damage or fading to report. The headlights are also crystal clear and without any cracks or moisture ingress having always been protected by a set of genuine Subaru headlamp covers. At the rear of the car both the original exhaust and supplying-dealer window sticker remain in place.

The interior is also in remarkable condition with no notable wear to the seat bolsters or centre panels. Not only does this example boast the rare leather option, but also air conditioning, which in this case remains ice-cold. On closer inspection the dash and centre console look like new and pleasingly the original Subaru cassette player remains fitted having never been replaced with an aftermarket head unit. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel, gear knob and handbrake lever are all perfectly presented with an excellent textured feel to the leather. The carpets are also pristine and are still protected in the footwells by original Turbo 2000 overmats. Everything works as it should and the boot area is also really tidy with no stains to the carpet.

Barely run-in with only 26k miles under its belt the Impreza feels as tight as a drum to drive, and even with such low mileage the accompanying service booklet is stamped 13 times. The last service was carried out in December 2021 at 26,046 miles and included a timing belt change. Lifting the bonnet the engine bay is very well presented, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition with no signs of any modifications, accident damage or previous poor repair.

The factory 16-inch Subaru alloy wheels present very well with only a few very small age-related blemishes to note on close inspection. They are wrapped in a matching set of Yokohama tyres that have seen only minimal use since fitment in January 2022. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.
