MODEL HISTORY
The W108 series was an update of the W111 'fintail sedans' that were based on the design fashion of late 1950's American cars. Critics referred to the W108 as the fin tail without fins however many argue it was this simple, square shape that created a timeless charm to the car.
Known for its reliability and durability it was proof of that reputation the Germans have for their mighty engineering. Produced in various models from 1965-1972, it was in 1967 a major update started production including the 280S and the 280SE, replacing the 250S, 250SE and the 300SE.
A new chassis and an upgraded 2778cc M130 engine with twin downdraft carburettors improved performance, producing 140bhp and pulling the car to 62mph in 12.5 seconds, with a top speed of 115mph.
Such is its desirability it has featured in many films over the years including James Bond 'Octopussy'. In which Roger Moore famously drove a black 280S along a railway in pursuit of a train.
Equipment
LHD, 8 track radio, French light pack, Dash clock, Power Steering, Manual.
EXTERIOR
An excellent example of the handsome sports W108. This 280S retains all of its original paint work and appears never to have had or need any body repair. The paint work shows its originality with a sprinkling of stone chips to the front end and a few touched up marks but overall is in remarkable condition for a car of this age. The chrome work sparkles and is in excellent condition as is all the trim. It's very rare to find a car of this age in such amazing original condition and is near on impossible to recapture this feel with a restored car.
INTERIOR
The interior is in incredible condition and must be similar to how it rolled out of the factory. The wood retains a deep shine with no fading or lacquer peeling off and the leather smells fresh and remains soft and supple to the touch. There is a period 8 track player in the centre of the console with a selection of french cartridges in the glove box. The blanking plate for the 8 track is still with the car and tucked away in the glove box.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The engine has recently been serviced so fires into life and idles well. The rare manual box is smooth and adds that sporty feel to a great 70's performance saloon.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The wheel caps remain in perfect condition as do the steel wheels, the tyres have plenty of tread remaining. The brakes pull the car to a stop efficiently and in a straight line.
HISTORY FILE
This 280s was first registered in France in December 1971, the original French registration document is still in the history file. The original service book has also been kept that has 6 stamps covering the history up till 31,000 miles. The history file also has many receipts showing recent service work, the last service being done in the spring of this year.
The car also comes with its original document holder that contains all the owners manuals and a couple of period parts manuals.
The car is currently registered on French plates.
