Model History

The B7 RS4 was an almost complete departure from previous Audi RS cars, as it was initially available as a four-door five-seat saloon, with the five-door five-seat Avant and two-door four-seat Cabriolet versions arriving later - the previous RS4 and RS2 were available exclusively as Avants.

Constructed from fully galvanised steel in a monocoque design, the B7 RS4 used lightweight aluminium for its front wings and bonnet. The saloon featured a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.31. Visually it differed from the standard A4/S4 with enlarged front and rear wheel arches to allow for a wider axle track. It also included two large frontal side air intakes for the two additional side-mounted coolant radiators. Standard were daytime running lights found within the main headlamp housings, and an acoustic parking system with front and rear sensors was also included. A lap timer within the central Driver Information System, aluminium pedals, a Bose ten-speaker sound system, and RS4 logos completed the finish.

The top speed for all variants was “officially” electronically limited to 155mph) although some owners have reported that the speed limiter is rather “liberal”, conforming to the pattern of previous Audi RS cars, with genuine top speeds of 168mph being recorded.

Misano Red pearl effect paintwork, Heated Black Valcona leather wingback Recaro seats with electric lumbar support, 19-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, Front and rear parking sensors, BOSE sound system, Cruise control, Engine starter button, Matte aluminium exterior trim, Piano black interior inlays, Aluminium pedals, RS4 Sports suspension with variable shock absorption and Dynamic Ride Control (DRC), RS instrument dials, RS Sports steering wheel in perforated leather with Sport button, Aluminium RS4 scuff plates, Servotronic speed-related power-assisted steering, Xenon Plus headlights with daytime-running lights, Headlight-cleaning system, quattro permanent four-wheel-drive, Electric windows, Heated and electrically-operated door mirrors, ISOFIX for rear seats, Spare key.

With its deep sills and wide arches the RS4 saloon’s muscular physique gives it huge road presence. The Misano Red bodywork is in excellent condition all round with only a very light dusting of chips to front bumper and bonnet, all perfectly in line with the age and mileage. The pearl effect paintwork is accented beautifully by the matte aluminium finish of the window trims, mirror covers, and grille surround. Looking along both sides the doors are entirely free from any unsightly car park dings, with absolutely no scuffs or scrapes to be found anywhere.

The cabin here is extremely well preserved, and with the high level of spec it’s hard to believe the car is actually thirteen years old. The sporty Recaro front seats are in great shape and really add to the sense of occasion being the desirable wingback option. Glossy inlays are a subtle complement to the black leather upholstery while finer aluminium details add a welcome contrast. The push button start is standard in the RS4 along with the perforated leather steering wheel and weighty gear knob, all remaining in excellent condition and showing little wear. The carpets, transmission tunnel and special RS4 scuff plates are also free from marking, with all switchgear still in fine operational order.

The high revving 4.2-litre V8 makes for an addictive soundtrack and, laced with carbon fibre, looks every bit the part. The tightly packed engine bay presents in fine condition throughout, with the carbon still retaining a smart glossy finish. With some 414hp on tap the RS4 can accelerate from 0-60mph in 4.7 seconds, and on to 155mph. The six-speed Getrag manual gearbox is mated to Audi’s Torsen-based quattro system providing superior grip in all weather conditions.

The double spoke alloy wheels are in excellent condition with few marks to speak of. They are shod in matching tyres all round with plenty of tread remaining at each corner. The Audi/Brembo gloss black brakes provide huge stopping power, maintaining excellent feel and performance on test.
