The Ferrari 360 was produced from 1999 to 2005. It succeeded the F355 and was replaced by the Ferrari F430. It utilized an entirely new all-aluminium space-frame chassis that was 40% stiffer than the F355, which used steel. The design was 28% lighter despite a 10% increase in overall dimensions. Along with a lightweight frame the new Pininfarina body styling deviated from traditions of the previous decade's sharp angles and pop-up headlights. The new V8 engine, common to all versions, had a 3.6-litre capacity, flat plane crankshaft, titanium connecting rods and generated 400hp. Despite what looked like modest gains on paper, in reality the power to weight ratio was significantly improved on over the F355, as a result of it being a lighter car with more power. The 0-60 acceleration performance improved from 4.6 to 4.3 seconds.
The 360 Spider was Ferrari's twentieth road-going convertible. Designed with a Spider variant in mind the 360 was built for strength in other areas. Ferrari designers strengthened the sills, stiffened the front of the floorpan and redesigned the windscreen frame. The rear bulkhead had to be stiffened to cut out engine noise from the cabin. The convertible's necessary dynamic rigidity is provided by additional side reinforcements and a cross brace in front of the engine. Passenger safety is ensured by a strengthened windscreen frame and roll bars. Due to use of light aluminium construction throughout, the Spider weighs in only 60kg heavier than the coupé.
Despite the car's mid-mounted V8 engine, the electrically operated top is able to stow into the compartment when not in use. The convertible top was available in black, blue, grey and beige colors. The transformation from a closed top to an open-air convertible is a two-stage folding-action that has been dubbed "a stunning 20 second mechanical symphony". The interior of the Spider is identical to that of the coupé.
Rosso Corsa paintwork, Nero Daytona-style seats, Front and rear Challenge-style grilles, Larini Sports exhaust, Scuderia Ferrari shields, Electrically operated seats, Carbon-fibre gear shift paddles, Brake calipers in Rosso, Carpets in Bordeaux, Ferrari tool kit, Ferrari document holder, Spare key.
The Spider presents magnificently in radiant Rosso Corsa. The paintwork remains to an excellent standard overall, with a deep shine to be found throughout. The car is well equipped with desirable options such as the Scuderia Ferrari shields and Challenge-style grilles front and rear, giving the 360 a more commanding presence. On close inspection there is a light dusting of stone chips on the front bumper but otherwise the condition is perfectly consistent with the low mileage of just 36k.
The Nero leather upholstery presents beautifully across the factory-optional Daytona-style seats, which are electrically adjustable for added convenience. Supple leather extends to the dash and door cards, all of which are unblemished; even the delicate silver trim is without any major signs of wear. The carpets look wonderful in Bordeaux and are well preserved in the footwells.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
Framed beautifully beneath the transparent rear lid the 3.6-litre V8 produces close to 400hp and launches the car from 0-60mph in little over four seconds. On close inspection the engine bay presents impeccably, which is unsurprising given the low mileage and extremely well-documented maintenance history. The car was most recently serviced in June 2018 at 36,123 miles, less than 200 miles ago. The cambelts were last replaced at 33,797 miles. This example also boasts an upgraded Larini Sports exhaust, which cost in the region of £3,800 and sounds pretty fantastic.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The 360 sits on its original five-spoke alloys shod in a matching set of Bridgestone Potenza tyres, all with plenty of tread remaining. The wheels are entirely unmarked all round and finished with the classic yellow centre caps. Between the spokes the Rosso calipers still present really nicely, with almost no signs of any wear. The brakes perform well on test.
The Spider was first registered in March 2001 and was supplied new by Maranello in Egham, Surrey. The car is accompanied by an impeccable maintenance history (as detailed below) with the most recent service having been carried out less than 200 miles ago. Despite its low mileage of just 36k the car has been serviced sixteen times since new; the first eight services were done at Ferrari, and the remainder at renowned marque specialist, Autofficina. The History File is complete with the original leather document pouch, all handbooks, the stamped service booklet, a raft of MOT certificates, and a stack of Ferrari invoices for servicing and general maintenance.
