Model History

Designed and built as a grand tourer the SL was first introduced in 1954. The designation SL derives from the German "Sport Lightweight" and was first applied to the 300SL Gullwing. The SL model range is still in production today and has spanned five generations of models from 1954 to the present day.

The R129, as featured here, is the fourth generation of SL and was built from 1989-2002. Featuring a shorter wheelbase and updated rear suspension over its predecessor, the R107, the R129 was quick to introduce model updates and featured a large amount of styling, mechanical, and technological updates over its 12 year life span.

The R129 shot to the public's attention in 1991 when Diana, Princess of Wales sold her Jaguar to purchase a 500SL. This sparked a media storm as this was the first time a member of the royal family had chosen a foreign car. The media questioned whether British royalty should be driving foreign cars and eventually due to pressure she was forced to return the car to Mercedes-Benz in 1992. The car now features in the Mercedes-Benz Museum.

This UK-supplied SL500 presents magnificently in elegant Blue Black Metallic. The gunmetal paintwork retains an impeccably sharp finish and is wonderfully glossy throughout following a full machine polish upon arrival with us. On close inspection there are almost no blemishes to be found, with no scrapes or scuffs and only the lightest of stone chips at the front end. This minor facelift example is finished in the correct two-tone paint scheme and sports clear front indicators. All panels are nice and straight along both sides and the removable hardtop is pristine. With the roof off the electric soft-top operates without fault. Better still, the underside is also remarkably fresh and without rust. This has to be one of cleanest UK SL500s we have seen here at 4 Star.

Additional photos, videos, and an inspection report can be provided on request.

Mushroom upholstery gives a welcome contrast, the leather presenting in excellent condition throughout. Even after 58k miles worth of use there is only very light wear on the driver’s bolster. The electrically adjustable seats are equipped with memory for added convenience, and this example also boasts the desirable rear seat option. The glossy walnut trim is undamaged throughout and the original Mercedes radio is still in place. All in all, a wonderful place to be.

The Mercedes 5-litre V8 is a perfect complement to the R129. With effortless power delivery and a smooth auto ‘box, the SL500 is a capable long distance cruiser that’s equally suited to daily use. With a mere 58k miles to its name the engine of this example remains in fine fettle having been recently serviced and freshly inspected at the current mileage. Out on the road the car performs faultlessly.

The SL sits on its original 16-inch 8-hole alloys, all in great condition with only the lightest of curb marking to report on very close inspection. The finish is still notably bright, and the centre badges are without any wear. The wheels are shod in good quality tyres all round, with Avons at the rear and brand new Pirellis at the front. The brakes perform well on test.
