Exterior

The grey metallic paintwork is finished to an excellent standard and the original hardtop in contrasting black is also present and correct. Looking very closely around the body there are almost no imperfections or marks to report. The chrome bumpers are immaculate with no signs of damage or tarnishing, all the trims and rubbers around the car remain in fine fettle, and the black mohair soft top also shows minimal wear with a clear rear window. The headlights and taillights are perfect, and the original Mercedes hub caps are colour-matched to the body.

Interior

The interior remains in excellent condition throughout. The original hard-wearing MB-Tex upholstery is free from any damage on both the seats and door cards. The wood trims appear to have been refurbished at some stage and looks fantastic. The dashboard top has avoided the usual sun damage and is free from any unsightly cracks. A new carpet set with the correct black square-weave pattern has been fitted, and we’re pleased to see an original Becker Europa radio still in place.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet of this beautiful SL is a real treat for the enthusiast. As with the rest of the car the engine bay is very well presented, and everything looks fresh. The 2.8-litre straight six is the original ‘matching numbers’ unit, and once fired up she idles smoothly up to temperature. Having resided in dry storage for a number of years we anticipate some mechanical recommissioning will be required if the new keeper wishes to put the car back into regular use.

History File

This stunning left-hand drive 280SL Pagoda was first registered in August 1968. It was imported by us back in 2019 and then fully UK-registered with all taxes paid on arrival. The car quickly found a new home within a small private collection but having seen very limited use over the years it’s now ready to be cherished by its next long-term custodian. The accompanying documentation includes a Date of Manufacture letter from Mercedes-Benz, import and export documentation, and the current V5C registration document showing only 1 UK keeper.
