The R107 chassis replaced the sought after W113 SL chassis or “Pagoda” in 1972. The R107 was produced in two variants, the SL and SLC, the SL being a two-seater convertible with a soft-top and removable hardtop.
As one of the second longest chassis series that Mercedes produced there are plenty of engine choices and variants to choose from. The 420SL was produced from 1985-1989 and replaced the 380SL, supplying the driver with the same amount of horsepower but with a healthy increase in torque.
The real benefit for the model was the comprehensive updates that were carried out and fitted to post 1985 cars to bring them up to the then modern standards. These included reworked suspension and anti-roll bars resulting in a more controlled ride; larger four-pot front brake calipers increased the cars braking ability. A limited differential was added and quite a few front-end parts were borrowed from the newly introduced W124 series. The front and rear bumpers were also updated along with a hefty amount of body sheet metal changes, then finished with the new door handles from the W126 series, plus a set of light alloy wheels similar to the W201 chassis.
Removable hardtop in Midnight Blue, 15-inch alloy wheels, Royal Blue leather upholstery (272), Rear axle with limited-slip differential (256), Front seats with orthopaedic backrest (406), Heated door mirrors (507), Electrically adjustable passenger door mirror (507), Electric windows (583), Heat-insulating glass all round with heated rear hardtop window (592), Fire extinguisher (682), Dark blue soft-top (744), ABS, Power-assisted steering, Central locking, Front fog lights, Headlamp wipers, Upgraded stereo system including amplifier and CD changer, Mercedes first aid kit, Mercedes tool roll, Alloy spare wheel.
The brilliant Arctic White body looks magnificent against the contrasting Midnight Blue hardtop. The soft-top is also dark blue and remains in fine order, free from any rips to the fabric or damage to the plastic rear windows. With only a handful of light blemishes to the paintwork on close inspection, the SL remains in great driving condition. All the rubber trim and brightwork appears original and presents well with few signs of age. The original registration number can still be found etched onto the glass.
The Royal Blue cabin certainly does not disappoint. The dash, centre console and door panels all look great and show no signs of significant use; even the foot-well carpets retain a fresh appearance. The steering wheel boasts a nice textured finish and so do the comfortable leather seats, which are more in keeping with a car having done half the mileage.
The interior retains a lovely period quality, the only visible modification being an upgraded sound system. A 10-disc CD changer and amplifier in the boot complement the JVC head unit and Alpine rear speakers, all of which combine to gives a fantastic sound, roof up or down. More recently the heater motor and resistor have been replaced. Original details such as the factory-spec’d fire extinguisher and SL tool roll can still be found, and beneath the boot carpet is the full size spare wheel.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The 420SL has a beautifully smooth V8 that gives effortless performance, but with surprisingly good fuel efficiency compared with the 5-litre. This example is accompanied by a great service history with plenty of stamps in the original service booklet, which are all either Mercedes or Specialists. The car will be freshly serviced upon sale for the new keeper’s peace of mind.
The engine bay of this example is tidy with no signs of excessive wear to the engine, ancillary parts, or inner panels. The 4.2-litre powerplant starts without fuss and idles quietly up to temperature. Out on the road, the automatic gearbox works just as it should, providing smooth changes through each of the four gears.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The factory set of 15-inch alloys look great on the SL and present in good condition. Looking closely there are one or two light marks to be found, so a perfectionist may choose to refurb for a pristine finish. The wheels are fitted with matching Dunlop tyres. ABS and disc brakes all round ensure the car stops quickly and safely.
This local example was supplied new by Mercedes-Benz in Woking. The pre-delivery inspection was carried out on 3rd April 1987 and the car was registered on 5th May. The same dealer had the SL back after its running in service at 1,169 miles and subsequently continued to look after the car for the next ten years, with nine entries in the book.
Following a change of owner, Auto-Merc in London took over the servicing and looked after the car for the next five years, with five more stamps in the book. Since that time it has been maintained by a couple of different Mercedes Specialists and then independently under its current ownership. The car has been part of a private collection since 2010 when it was originally sold by 4 Star.
In the History File you’ll find a wallet full of service receipts and past MOT certificates. Along with its original service book there is the original Mercedes-Benz Woking leather document pack complete with all owner's manuals.
