Exterior

The Polaris Metallic paintwork presents to a fine standard all round with few imperfections to note. The whole car has just been treated to a full machine polish resulting in a lovely smooth finish with no unsightly swirl marks or scratches. There are one or two small chips and marks on the bumpers and a minor paint blemish on the bonnet but little to detract from the car’s overall highly impressive finish. Finer details such as the polished window surrounds and rubber side mouldings are in great shape, and all the lights are clear and free from signs of moisture ingress. The car sits on the correct M Technic alloy wheels, all in excellent condition having previously been refurbished to a high standard.

Interior

The original sports seats remain feeling comfortable and supportive with no bolster damage other than expected some surface wear to the fabric on the driver’s side; the Anthracite velour has otherwise worn extremely well throughout with all the original M emblems present and correct. Having clearly never been overexposed to the sun, the red seatbelt buttons are unfaded and the dashboard is free from cracks. All the switchgear is still reassuring solid to operate and, other than a slightly later style Blaupunkt cassette radio, the whole interior is very original. The footwell carpets are well protected by a smart set of black overmats, and at the rear of the car the boot area is notably clean and tidy.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

As to be expected the engine bay looks great, not overly dressed to a concours standard but in excellent original condition. The car has just returned from our trusted BMW specialist who carried out a full vehicle health check, Inspection II service, and refurbishment of all four brake calipers – the invoice for this work totalling over £2,700. In line with very the low mileage of only 38k, the car feels tight to drive and certainly pulls well. The 3.4-litre straight six is remarkably smooth but still packs a punch when you need to get a shift on. Power is transferred to the rear wheels via a 4-speed ‘switchable’ automatic gearbox and limited-slip differential.

History File

This rare E28 M535i was supplied new by Milcars Ltd in April 1986. Since then it has driven just 38,321 miles in the hands of 8 registered keepers (current since 2014). The car is accompanied by a decent amount of paperwork including the original service booklet with 16 stamps, a raft of invoices and MOT certificates dating back to the early nineties, an original UK M535i sales brochure, Blaupunkt radio instructions, and the current V5C showing 7 former keepers.
