Model History

The Mk4 Golf was launched in October 1997. It was a deliberate attempt to take the model further upmarket, with a high-quality interior and higher equipment levels. The GTI 25th Anniversary Edition was a special version of the Mk4, produced for the European Market to commemorate the first GTI, launched in 1976. They were available in three paint colours – Tornado Red, Reflex Silver, and Diamond Black – and were equipped with many extra features not included in the standard GTI. Additional spec included 18-inch BBS RC alloys, a perforated leather gearshift gaiter and handbrake, red and black seat belts, red and black ‘Le Mans’ upholstered Recaro seats, factory body kit, a 6-speed manual transmission, larger front brakes (312mm) with red calipers, lowered sports suspension, and brushed aluminium interior trim.

Tornado Red paintwork, Recaro sports seats in ‘Le Mans’ cloth upholstery, Six-speed manual gearbox, 18-inch BBS alloy wheels, 25th Anniversary Edition numbered plaque (no. 71), Lowered sports suspension, Darkened rear lenses, Roof spoiler, Tinted glass, Front fog lights, Electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors, Electric windows, Air conditioning, Aluminium pedals, Brushed aluminium interior trims, GTI gear knob, Perforated leather rimmed steering wheel with bright red stitching, Multifunction computer, ‘Gamma’ cassette radio, Rear head restraints, Remote central locking, Alarm, Immobiliser, ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-pressure Distribution), ESP (Electronic Stabilisation Programme), Spare key.

This desirable 25th Anniversary GTI is finished in a glistening coat of Tornado Red. The paintwork is absolutely first-rate and presents with a deep, lustful shine throughout – we were amazed with the condition upon arrival and still can’t believe it’s actually driven 80k miles. The current owner has very recently treated the car to a £2,300 cosmetic refresh including all new door and bumper mouldings. Amazingly there are no stone chips at the front end and both sides of the car remain arrow-straight. A truly stunning example in arguably the best colour.

Additional photos, videos, and an inspection report can be provided on request.

The Recaro sports seats are trimmed in black Le Mans cloth with subtle red detailing, a perfect match for the exterior paint scheme. The interior remains feeling really fresh throughout, much more in line with a car having done half the mileage. The upholstery front and rear presents with only the lightest of wear, the deep bolsters remaining in particularly sound condition. Other commonly worn items such as the steering wheel and gearknob show few signs of use, and in the footwells you’ll still find the original piped overmats front and rear. The special edition plaque in the driver’s door shut shows this example to be number 71 of 1,800 uniquely number examples.

The 1.8-litre turbocharged engine produces 170hp with a maximum torque of 235 Nm from as low as 1,950 to 5,000 rpm. Lifting the bonnet reveals a particularly clean engine bay with absolutely no signs of damage or poor repair. The car is accompanied by a fantastic maintenance record, which is entirely Volkswagen main dealer right up until the most recent service carried out in January this year at 80k miles.

The 18-inch BBS alloys really set the 25th Anniversary off beautifully, still looking fantastic in their original polished finish with no curb marking or lacquer damage to speak of. The brake calipers also present well with the correct red finish, and all tyres have plenty of tread remaining.
