Model History

The W204 C63 AMG was reportedly the first AMG-Mercedes designed from the ground up. Its C-Class AMG predecessors had essentially featured "bolt on" performance modifications, and according to Car and Driver these earlier AMG models suffered from "relentless understeer" and "heavy steering". To combat this the C63 had revised front-end suspension that was taken from the CLK63 AMG Black Series. The ESP could also now be completely turned off, interfering only under heavy braking. The C63 also had the quickest, most responsive steering of any Mercedes to date.

The C63’s 6.2-litre V8 engine, despite being detuned compared to other AMG offerings using the same powerplant, still provided the C63 with more horsepower and torque over direct rivals such as the Audi RS4 and BMW M3. The 7G-Tronic automatic transmission featured AMG SpeedShift with three shift modes – Comfort, Sport and Manual – with the last one running with the converter locked allowing the driver to hold the engine at the rev limit. Car and Driver tested the car in their December 2007 issue and recorded a 0–60 mph time of 3.9 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 12.3 seconds at 116 mph. This made the C63 AMG the quickest 4-door production saloon in the world at its debut.

The glossy Obsidian Black paintwork presents well throughout with only one or two light blemishes to report on very close inspection. There are just a handful of light chips to the front end, and both sides of the car remain arrow straight. The stealthy black aesthetic is perfectly offset by the 19-inch alloys and large AMG calipers in silver.  Dark tinted glass completes the look.


Inside, the supple Nappa leather retains its original feel and texture, with none of the shine that can be typically seen on worn black upholstery. Pleasingly there is little wear to be found to the bolsters, which still provide excellent support and comfort on more spirited drives; the rear seats are in equally fine condition. Glancing across the dash and centre console the aluminium inlays present well and all the switchgear is unmarked. The controls are easy to navigate and the COMAND interface screen tucks away neatly when not required.


AMG’s exquisite 6.2-litre V8 sounds like thunder on first turn of the key. The exhaust note is intoxicating at high revs but a little more subdued around town.  With some 450hp on tap the hand-built powerplant is really what makes the C63 so special. The under-bonnet area of this example presents very well indeed, with the engine maker’s unique plaque taking pride of place atop the motor.


The 19-inch multi-spoke AMG alloys fill those wide arches perfectly. The wheels appear to have been refurbished at some point and so are free from any unsightly curb marking or wear. The silver AMG calipers also present well, and do a great job of pulling the car to halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

This C63 was first registered in July 2010; it was supplied new by Mercedes-Benz Loughton. The leather document pack with all dealer-supplied handbooks is present with the car along with Mercedes invoices for service work, past MOT certificates, and a clear HPI certificate.
