Exterior

Finished in its factory colour of Silver Metallic, this early 928 retains the clean, uncluttered lines that make the original design so distinctive. A full repaint during the current owner’s tenure has given the car a particularly attractive finish, with consistent colour across the panels and no obvious cloudiness to the silver. The body is impressively straight down both sides, while the original-style textured stone-chip finish has been retained along the lower sections.

Having been enjoyed on European road trips, the car carries some light stone chips, principally around the nose, together with a small graze to the passenger-side front bumper. Elsewhere, imperfections are limited to a handful of minor marks. The glass and surrounding rubbers present well, and the refurbished Teledial wheels complete the period appearance. A small crack in the passenger-side rear lamp and a missing rear towing-eye cover are noted. The visible wheel arches and underside also present cleanly, without a heavy black coating obscuring their appearance.

Interior

The cabin is a particularly charming place to spend time, combining black leather with beautifully presented tartan seat centres and matching door inserts. The front and rear seats have been retrimmed during the current ownership and remain in excellent condition, bringing a fresh feel to an interior that retains much of its older trim and character.

The dashboard presents well, while the carpets and luggage compartment remain very tidy for their age, complemented by Porsche floor mats. The steering wheel shows light wear, and a Porsche-branded audio head unit is accompanied by upgraded speakers and a compact JBL subwoofer.

Some age-related imperfections remain, including slight lifting of the vinyl on the driver’s door, small splits and marks to the rear side trims, and localised carpet wear. The headlining is generally smart, with a little sagging towards the rear and two small access covers missing near the rear sun visors. These details do little to detract from the cabin’s overall appeal.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Beneath the bonnet, this 928 benefits from a later 4.7-litre V8 paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, combining the appeal of the early body with an upgraded powerplant. Further development by 928 Spares included European-specification high-lift camshafts and matching intake components, alongside extensive mechanical refurbishment.

The engine starts readily and sounds as it should. Its presentation reflects a car maintained for use, with a clean, tidy engine bay and smart silver-painted surrounding bodywork. Recent preparation includes an October 2026 service and replacement battery, together with an MOT valid until October 2027. The current owner reports completing the journey from Jávea in Spain back to the UK within the last couple of months, a fitting illustration of how this characterful grand tourer has continued to be enjoyed.

History File

The accompanying Porsche Certificate of Production confirms completion on 23 November 1977 for the 1978 model year, finished in Silver Metallic with black leatherette and pinstripe upholstery. The car subsequently spent time in the United States, where an earlier Chicago Car Club advert records the installation of a 1983 4.7-litre engine and substantial mechanical work during 2016–2017.

Since bringing the car to the UK, its current owner, Stuart, has invested extensively in its appearance and mechanical condition, with the intention of enjoying European touring from his home in Spain. This has included a full repaint, seat retrimming, and considerable attention from Porsche specialists.

A January 2021 invoice from 928 Spares totals £11,095.46 and details work across the engine, suspension, steering, brakes and fuel system. Highlights include Bilstein B6 dampers front and rear, a refurbished steering rack, larger front brake assemblies and servo, a replacement brake master cylinder and flexible hoses, rear wheel bearings, engine mounts, water pump, and the camshaft and intake upgrades.

Further work by 928 specialists in 2023 is supported by an invoice for £4,630.85, covering alternator replacement, a cam-tower gasket, clutch slave cylinder, driveshaft gaiters, an oil service and attention to the heating and ventilation system. Additional paperwork records interior refurbishment, audio upgrades, replacement trim parts and ongoing maintenance.

The result is a thoughtfully improved early 928, balancing its distinctive period appearance and well-preserved character with substantial expenditure directed towards usability. It offers an appealing prospect for an enthusiast seeking a classic Porsche to enjoy on longer journeys.
